While a larger push for government support is underway, Wethos is partnering with Freelancers Union on a Freelancers Relief Fund to provide independents with critical support.
It’s not complicated to see what people need right now — income. That’s why Wethos is partnering up with the Freelancers Union to launch a half a million dollar relief fund that will distribute grants of up to $1,000 for freelancer households experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic.
Applications for the relief grants will open on April 2, 2020, and provide necessary funds for food, utility payments, and additional cash assistance. Until then, we’re working hard to call on those in our network who are in the position to contribute, both through direct donations and through a series of digital events Wethos is hosting to raise additional money for relief efforts.
Why are freelancers in need of emergency assistance?
Even without a global pandemic, freelancers work without traditional protections and are often faced with financial instability when sudden changes occur. With independent workers making up one-third of the U.S. workforce and contributing more than $1 trillion to the country’s GDP, they’re now vulnerable to losing work and contracts, handling personal illness, or caring for family members without a safety net. You can read more about the Freelancers Relief Fund and access more important COVID-19 related resources for freelancers here.
We’re launching more long-term, sustainable efforts to keep our freelancers nourished, nurtured, and paid.
To raise additional funds for the Freelancers Union and create more paid opportunities for folks in our own freelance community, we’re kicking off a series of creative new digital projects. By empowering independents to share their skills and connect with one another, we’re building a foundation for future collaborations to come. Got an idea? We’re offering $200-$500 stipends for folks who want to lead a conversation, host an online party, livestream their doodling, create a downloadable workbook, and more.
